A little background behind the inspiration for this song...
Life is hard and that's where the idea came from—living through the hard parts amongst the strife in this crazy world. I wrote this song to tell someone, "Hey, I know things suck right now, but I've been there and it gets better. I promise." This song is a progression from my own hopelessness, to self-acceptance, and to finally understanding my place in the world; to be love just as I have been loved. I believe that these lyrics can speak hope into someone else's life just like they did my own.
This is my breakdown of the lyrics for "Something Better". In the end, the song is truly up to the interpretation of the listener—however,
below I'd like to elaborate a bit on the meaning of the lyrics for me.
-
“I wish I saw some meaning
To all that is happening
I, I wish that I could tell you
How long the worst would last
Who could have known
We’d sink so low
Still in our hearts
The will to survive
I need to know
Why is this still
The way we live
I wish that it would end”
It’s hard to know why the place we live in is so messed up and I wish I could explain it.
As a human race, we’ve sunk so far down… yet somehow, we still carry on.
That said, we live pretty recklessly and it’s sad to see every single day; I just want it to stop.
-
“There might be something in the water
There might be something in the air
There must be something I can reach to
I know
Something better is out there
World, where have you gone
Your heart’s of stone
Raid the stores
Break their doors
Enough is enough”
Seriously, what is going on? Is it just something in the air or are we broken for good?
Something better must be out there, right? I mean, look around. Things are getting worse and worse.
Riots are breaking out, lives are being unjustly taken, crimes are constantly being committed.
It's just time for this to end.
-
“You still want more
What is it for
I’m finished with this endless war
Have we finally reached the end
Of the story
Of our plans
I cannot understand
What is the grand plan”
It keeps on happening; the pure hatred of it all… The war is never-ending and my efforts and the efforts of so many others, well, they seem pointless. It’s brought me to a place of near hopelessness.. I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel anymore. Why is everything so broken?
-
“We need answers to the questions
That we all seek
Not afraid to listen
Not afraid to speak
The truth
Hidden in the cracks of life
Written in our script
In the midst of strife”
I spend so much time asking “why?”, but it's seriously due time to take action. It’s time to speak out for what we believe in no matter what. Your word counts. You matter.
-
“There might be something in the water
There might be something in the air
There must be something I can reach to
I know
Something better is so near”
It still doesn’t feel right.. The world, that is, but I feel that I’m starting to accept it— I feel a little better. I feel hope that things aren’t as bad as they seem, and even if they are, I carry some hope that they'll get better.
-
“Just be love, it’ll bring you peace
Be peace, that’ll bring you joy
And patience and kindness and goodness shows
Just how far you’ve grown”
Love is the answer… Truly, you’ll never be happier when you give love and receive it.
It brings you this inner peace… Which leads to all these happy emotions.
For me, I’m passionate about the hatred being constantly perpetuated in the world
and I just want to spread a more positive message of love.
-
“Because it owns you
Self control, calmness and humility
In this hour holds the key
The darkness will not win
Please don’t give in”
Just because you understand things a little better now and feel better about everything, doesn’t mean you can just let go and trust that things will maintain themselves. You have to hold on to what you just obtained and hold fast. It can escape you if you let it.
-
“There might be something in the water
There might be something in the air
There must be something I can reach to
I know
There is something in the water
There is something in the air
There is something I can reach to
I know
Something better is right here”
This end part is all about acceptance. I've finally found a place of contentment and inner peace—everything is going to be okay…
That realization starts with you and it starts with me.
That betterment I’ve been searching so long for, it's right here in front of me.
